Visit Plaza de Mayo, the city’s foundational site and witness of our country’s political history. There we’ll visit the Pink House, our Presidential Palace, the Cabildo, our primitive town hall, and the Neoclassical-styled Metropolitan Cathedral, the final home of Argentina’s founding father, José de San Martín. We’ll then head for San Telmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. It used to be the residential district favored by the upper class until late 19th century when a yellow fever epidemic caused the wealthier families to leave northwards. The area was marginalized until the 1970s when many artists and artisans came to San Telmo to install their workshops. Nowadays, thanks to its amazing architecture and hip atmosphere, this ancient neighborhood is really blooming. We’ll walk its cobbled streets, where the city’s Colonial past seems to come back to life, making a stop at Plaza Dorrego, best known for its traditional antiques fair, held every Sunday. Leaving San Telmo behind, we’ll continue southwards to La Boca, one of the city’s most authentic and charming neighborhoods. It is a working class district, heavily shaped by Italian immigrants who came to our country in large numbers during the last quarter of the 19th century. Here, we’ll make a special visit to the mythical Caminito Street, which sums up everything that gives La Boca its distinctive spirit: the strong passion for soccer, the heavy presence of art and color, and the Tangoesque atmosphere. At last, we`ll pass through Puerto Madero, the latest addition to the city’s barrios. In 1991, its huge warehouses and silos were remodeled and redesigned, to finally integrate the river to the city and to create a new corporative, residential, hotel and gastronomically district, which has become the playground for the pretty Porteños and the international jet-set. We will then head towards the northern part of the city. In Retiro and Recoleta, we will learn about the dream of our local aristocrats in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when they sought to build a small-scale Paris in the heart of Buenos Aires. After visiting the impressive Plaza San Martín, where Jorge Luis Borges used to take his walks, we’ll stroll down Avenida Alvear, chosen by the world’s most distinguished brands to install their exclusive boutiques, looking up to see the many wonderful French-style palaces which nowadays house a number of embassies. Then we’ll visit the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, one of the city’s oldest churches, which dates to the Colonial era. Finally, we’ll admire the celebrated Recoleta Cemetery, a true labyrinth of ornate mausoleums. We’ll make a stop at Eva Peron’s grave, one of the country’s most recognizable icons. We’ll come across sumptuous French palaces again in Palermo Chico, the area of Palermo best known for its large parks designed by celebrated landscape architects, such as the illustrious Frenchman Charles Thays. This project began in 2005 when Bonnie family, highly recognized in France, acquired the 130-hectare property in the Uco Valley. A special company was born that owes its name to a combination of the words "Diamante" and "Andes" and since the 2007 harvest produces wines in exceptional conditions. After breakfast, we will drive out of the city of Salta on the road south of the Lerma Valley. We will drive one-and-a-half hours south on Route 68, where we will see the amazing foothills of the Andes Mountains, stopping for coffee. We will then drive through the breathtaking Quebrada de las Conchas, formed about 50 million years ago. This quebrada, or canyon, has intense colours and spectacular geological formations formed by the concentration of different minerals in the soil. We will stop at different points to observe the rock formations and how the light changes them throughout the day. You can take short walks to take a closer look at the formations. After leaving the canyon, we will enter the Calchaquí Valleys, a region that was of economic importance during the colonial era (after the 1600s) for its cattle breeding and the production of spices, grains and wine, some of which was taken by mule as far away as the Atacama Desert in Chile. Today, Cafayate is the heart of high-altitude wine country, where vines are grown 1,700 meters above sea level, giving them enhanced aromas and flavours. Cafayate has become known for its boutique wineries and vineyards where you can eat traditional foods paired with a bottle of high-altitude malbec or torrontés. We will have lunch (not included) here and visit some of the other wineries and vineyards. After walking around the town and visiting its silver and tapestry handicraft markets, we will check into the hotel. After leaving the canyon, we will enter the Calchaquí Valleys, a region that was of a high economic importance during the colonial era (after the 1600s) for its cattle breeding and the production of spices, grains and wine. A short drive into town, we will stop to visit the Museo de la Vid y el Vino (The Vine and Wine Museum), where we will learn about the beauty of the magnificent terroir wines of the Calchaquí Valleys. Today, Cafayate is the heart of the high-altitude wine region, where vines are grown 1,700 meters above sea level, giving them enhanced aromas and flavors. The winemaking process combines the extreme temperatures and sun exposure to the grapes along with the poor soil to make full-bodied, highquality reds, and fruity aromatic whites in small quantities. Cafayate has become known for its boutique wineries and vineyards of high-altitude malbec or torrontés. We will visit El Porvenir Winery and Bodega Nanni, and spot the differences between these wines and Mendoza’s. We will enjoy a barbecue lunch paired with great wines in this amazing region. After visiting the town and its handicraft markets, we will return to Salta in the afternoon, stopping to see some of the amazing views of the mountains in the afternoon sunlight. After breakfast, we will leave from your hotel in Salta and head west to enter the Puna, a remote high-altitude desert where the natives long ago adapted to the harsh conditions of extreme temperature changes and thin air. Towns like San Antonio de los Cobres carry on some of the Inca traditions. Pachamama and Inti Raymi ceremonies, for example, are celebrated with as much fervour as Easter and Christmas in Western cultures.Our first stop will be Quebrada del Toro, a narrow valley used in the mid-1800s to transport cattle through the fertile valleys of the Andean foothills and across a high-altitude desert to the Atacama Desert in Chile. This epic adventure used to take at least a month and a half, and could only be attempted during the summer when the temperature changes are less extreme. In this canyon, Argentina and Chile built a railway across the Andes to increase trade. Construction started on both sides of the mountain range in 1919 and the lines finally met more than 35 years later at Socompa Pass near San Antonio de los Cobres. We will stop to take photos and look around the towns on the way to San Antonio de los Cobres. Then, we will drive 100 kilometers through the Puna towards Salinas Grandes, a vast white desert of salt crystals where we can walk and take photos. After enjoying a picnic lunch with wine at this amazing spot, we will drive to Quebrada de Humahuaca, a multicolored canyon that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will go down the breathtaking Cuesta de Lipán from 4,170 meters above sea level to Purmamarca at 2,000 meters above sea level. We will reach your hotel in Purmamarca in the late afternoon. The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a narrow mountain valley located in the province of Jujuy in northwest Argentina. The name Quebrada (literally "broken") translates as a deep valley or ravine. It receives its name after Humahuaca, a small city of 11,000 inhabitants. The region has always been a crossroads for economic, social and cultural communication. It was a caravan road for the Inca Empire in the 15th century, then an important link between the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and the Viceroyalty of Peru, as well as a stage for many battles of the Spanish War of Independence. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2003. Purmamarca & Lamas: Today we will meet our cargo lamas in the outskirts of the town and close to the famous Cerro de los Siete Colores: Its unique color range is the product of a complex geological history including marine sediments, lake and river movements elevated with the movement of the tectonic plates. This breathtaking sight is composed of 7 different colors, all of which derive from different types of rocks; leading to its diverse range of colors. We will walk for 1 hour approximately and then have a picnic lunch at a beautiful point located in the backyard of a private house. Observations: Llamas cannot be ridden; they carry the luggage needed for the trek. It is important to remember to dress for extreme sunny conditions all year round: long sleeves shirts and trousers, UV sun protection, hats, sunglasses, and a windproof layer must be in our backpack.
