Visit: Ulaanbaatar - Gorkhi-Terelj National Park & Khentii Mountains - Zuugiin Rashaan Springs - Zegestei River - Khagiin Khar Nuur - Khavirgiin Davaa Pass - Boot
Upon arrival at the airport you will be welcomed by our team. We will bring you to your comfortable, centrally located hotel. Ulaanbaatar is a fast-growing modern city with more than 1.3 million habitants. Depending on your arrival time, a city tour can be organised. City sightseeing includes Bogd Khan's Winter & Summer Palace, a series of beautiful traditional buildings in which the eighth Living Buddha and the last king lived. It is now a museum displaying fascinating artefacts and costumes associated with the last king as well as his collection of stuffed animals. We will stop at the Gandantegchinlen Monastery. It is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia. We will scroll through the different monasteries and see the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, an 82-food high statue gilded in gold and covered with silk cloths. We will finish city tour with Zaisan hill to have a view of whole Ulaanbaatar. The city sightseeing tour takes about 4 – 5 hours.
In the evening your tour guide will give you a short briefing about the upcoming trip and answer all your questions before he takes you to a famous Mongolian restaurant for the first taste of Mongolian food.
We'll leave UB early in the morning and travel through a valley surrounded on all sides by forested hillsides and stunning granite cliffs. Wild flowers and plants blanket the valley, which is home to peacefully grazing herds of yaks, horses, goats, and sheep. We'll go on a sightseeing tour of Terelj National Park. Turtle Rock, Aryaval Monastery, and a small meditation monastery at the foot of the mountain, will be our first stop. Further down, at the exit of the park, we will visit the 100 monks’ cave. Fun fact: during the purge of Stalinism, about 100 monks were hiding in this small cave from persecution.
The Genghis Khan Monument will be our final stop. The latter is a massive aluminium statue of Genghis Khan mounted on his horse. It is possible to ascend to the top of the monument, where you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. A small museum provides a thorough overview of the history of the Great Mongol Empire, including the succession lines of the great Khans and their invasions. We will arrive at the horse breeding family at noon where we will have. We will meet our horseman, load our gear and food on pack horses. We will ride through lush meadows for a couple of hours towards the Terelj River valley. Then, we will have dinner and camp on the Terelj River bank.
Today, as we hike along the Tuul River, you'll note how the scenery shifts as we pass through quiet pine forests with just the occasional animal call for company. Keep your ears out for woodpeckers and your eyes peeled for golden eagles circling high over us in search of prey. We will arrive at the confluence of the Tuul and Hagiin rivers, where we will camp for the night. As we go deeper and further into the forest area, we will see how remote we get from the urban lifestyle.
Leaving the Tuul valley behind us, we will enter taiga. This environment is typical moose habitat, and if lucky, you might see the marks of this magnificent animal by the end of the day, you will be able to detect their presence like an expert! The landscape is breathtaking.
After several hours of riding, we start to ascend a mountain through deep forest noted for its abundance of wolves, bears, deer and moose. Reaching its top, we overlook and descend to the breath-taking Khagiin Khar Nuur. We will ride to three wonderful smaller lakes further on in the valley, three pearls. The most adventurous of you can climb the surrounding mountains and admire the superb panorama. We will reach the lake in the evening.
After breakfast we will ride through Khongoryn River valley. Riding down the stream for 4 hours, we will ford the river. After a couple more hours, we will come across a mountainous forest of birch, pine and age-old cedar. We will make a steep ascent, and an even steeper descent across the Khaviragiin Pass, which lies at the eastern shoulder of Altan Olgii peak. Translated as Golden Cradle,' this 2646m mountain is one of the highest peaks of the Khentii range. We will spend the night camping in the forest, close to a stream.
Today we will continue riding towards Terelj through the Dund Bayan Gol valley. Towards the end of day, we will find a good spot to set up our tented camp.
We will ride to our host family at Terelj National Park. Today our ride in Ogoomor valley is slightly longer than the other days but easier. After crossing Terelj River we head straight back to the local family and our vehicle will pick us up. The time has come to leave and drive back to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital. You can use your free afternoon to see as you fit. You could always go see lovely cultural exhibitions and admire the contortionists while watching colorful and rhythmic Mongolian dances.
