The island of Skiathos belongs to the Sporades complex and amazes visitors with the lush pine forests, the sandy beaches, and vivid nightlife. The most interesting sightseeing is probably the Medieval Castle of Skiathos, accessible by tour boat, and the Museum of Papadiamantis, an important Greek writer who was originating from this island. The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is located 5 km north of Skiathos Town, amidst an area of rich vegetation. The monastery was built in the early 19th century and it has great historical importance for the island, as it contributed to the Greek War of Independence. The museum of Papadiamantis was the home of Alexandros Papadiamantis, an important Greek writer, who lived there in the 19th century.
