Visit: Belgrade - ŠUmadija - Oplenac - Topola - Kovačica Naive Art - Novi Sad - Sremski Karlovci - Fruška Gora Monasteries
Arrival to Belgrade Airport. Transfer to Belgrade, followed by city sightseeing with local guide.
Belgrade sightseeing starts at Kalemegdan - the fortress and a beautiful park are places where the most distant past can be seen. Today’s Belgrade started as a human settlement thousands of years ago here. You will hear an unusual and exciting story about Belgrade - the 'Crossroads of the Worlds'. Kalemegdan offers a beautiful view at the confluence of Sava and Danube rivers, New Belgrade and Zemun. After walking on Kalemegdan we’ll continue through the Prince Michael (Knez Mihajlova) pedestrian street. Along our walk to the Republic Square we will see many beautiful old buildings, including the monument to Prince Michael situated at the centre of Republic square, and buildings of National Theatre and National Museum.
We will also see Terazije, National Assembly, City Council ('Old Court'), Kneza Miloša Street (with some scars from the recent conflicts still visible), luxurious residential quarter of Dedinje, Memorial of Marshall Tito, Red Star soccer stadium. Visit to St Sava church, one of the largest religious objects in the whole world. Our tour continues: Slavija Circus, King Milan Street, going to 'Old Town' and passing by Orthodox Cathedral and the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Princess Ljubica's Residence and famous Question mark '?' the oldest restaurant in the city, and the only one with such a strange name in the whole world. Our journey starts with drive to Mt. Avala to visit to the Mausoleum of the Unknown Hero, work of Ivan Mestrovic, famous Yugoslav sculptor, which was built on the mountain top and offers beautiful views of the rolling hills of Šumadija. Photo stop by one of the landmarks of Belgrade, the Avala TV tower. Continue to Topola. Upon arrival visit to the Church of Our Lady from 1813, Karađorđe's endowment, and to his Residence, this is today a museum of the First Serbian Uprising and its leader who established the Royal House of Karadjordjevic. Drive to the top of Oplenac hill, where one very special and unique church is situated. Built after WWI by king Peter I Karadjordjevic, church of St. George was envisioned to be the Royal Family mausoleum for both his ancestors and descendants. Free time for lunch, before returning to Belgrade.
Visit the picturesque village of Kovačica, which is world famous for its school of Naive art. More than two centuries ago, in 1802, about two hundred of Slovak Protestant families started their migration to the southern parts of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire. While wandering in vast lowlands, they saw the crossroads and beside it a small blacksmith’s workshop. That is where they decided to settle and raise the village. Nearly 140 years they lived in their traditional manner, working in the fields and enjoying the right to freely practice their Lutheran faith. But in the wake of World War II, a sudden explosion of creativity started happening among the villagers. It manifested mainly through visual art, communicating to us their emotions, habits and scenes from everyday life. Their art presents itself in pure and joyful way, to some extent like children would do in their expression. The momentum of creativity continues today, and has been recognized from Tokyo to New York under the name of Naive art.
During our visit to Kovačica, we will visit several galleries and ateliers, among them the main Gallery of Naive Art and enjoy over there the works of two of the most known painters: Martin Jonaš and Zuzana Chalupova. Next, we pay a visit to the home of the recognized violin maker who is the head of one of the most creative family in this unique place. Return to hotel for overnight.
Breakfast at hotel and check out. Today the road takes us to the province of Vojvodina, home of 27 different ethnic groups and six religious denominations. Out first stop will be Sremski Karlovci, former seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy. Town of Sremski Karlovci is also a former cultural and political center of the Vojvodina province and a place where a very important document - Karlowitz Peace Treaty - had been signed back in 17th century. Region is also known for its wine production. Bermet being the most known. We continue to day with drive to the famous Petrovaradin Fortress, second largest fortress in Europe, built on the large rock above the Danube. In attempt to emphasize its size, strength and importance, contemporaries named it the 'Gibraltar on the Danube'. You will hear about extremely complicated maze of underground tunnels and galleries, 16 km long, which was part of state-of- the-art defence system. Today, the fortress is where summer international music festival, 'EXIT' takes place.
We proceed to the historic nucleus of Novi Sad. We'll have an enjoyable walk down the colorful pedestrian zone mostly lined with XIX c. architecture and admire the Orthodox Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and Monument to great Serbian poet Zmaj. Pedestrian zone finishes in the beautiful Liberty Square with baroque City Hall, and neo-gothic Catholic Church. After some free time at leisure in the heart of the city, we proceed with the panoramic ride covering major city areas and boulevards and also passing by house that was home of the Einstein’s in the early XX c. Accommodation at hotel in Novi Sad, balance of the day at leisure. Overnight.
Fruška Gora – national park and mountain located 30 km from Novi Sad, hosts 17 functioning monasteries of Serbian Orthodox Church. Excellent geographical position, moderate climate and rich flora and fauna make this mountain special. We'll visit 3 monasteries: Krušedol, Grgeteg and Hopovo. Return to Novi Sad in the afternoon. Balance of the day at leisure.
Breakfast at hotel and check out. Free time until departure. Transfer to Belgrade Airport. Departure.
