His unique work is highly sought after as he is among the crafters of Malay weapons who still employ traditional methods to produce weapons that the Malays consider as a symbol of strength and authority. After that, we proceed to visit the making of ‘Tekat’ (Gold Thread Embroidery). It is a handiwork passed down from mothers to daughters. In the olden days, each girl was given her first and most important assignment to display her handiwork by creating beautiful embroidery pieces to be worn or paraded for her own wedding ceremony. Today, this handiwork has become very popular, especially among royal families in Malaysia. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. This tour, we will bring you to witness some of the traditional traits that the people of Penang still practice. It begins with the Shoe Maker. This is no ordinary shoe, this is the Nyonya Beaded Shoes, handmade and custom desiged. Creating a pair of beaded shoes is an incredibly time-consuming process as the plastic beads are so tiny. It can take up to three months to complete the beading for a single pair of shoes. We then proceed to witness the Flour Figurine. Mini-figurines of Chinese warriors and cartoon characters, made of a special powder mixed with water and then hardened, the fasinating craftmanship is really something you don’t want to miss. Followed by Pancake ‘Popiah’ Skin Making. Between two quiet shophouses on Chowrasta Road, Uncle Lim paces back and forth in a rhythmic motion between two hotplates with a wheat-flour dough "glove" on his right hand. He whips the elastic dough ball like a yo-yo, slams it down on a hotplate and yanks it off, leaving a very thin pancake. Before it burns, his helper scraps off the popiah skin (spring roll wrapper) and stacks it on top of the pile. Uncle Lim has been doing it for the last 50 years, 5 hours a day, 6 days a week.
